It’s #FabulousFemaleFriday! This week we are so excited to be Connecting with the incredible Nicolle Hodges. Nicolle is a journalist, broadcaster, and producer with CTV Vancouver, the Daily Hive, Monte Cristo Magazine, and VanCityBuzz. When she sent us her bio, she noted that she is “attempting to become a scrabble champion, is studying astronomy, and runs a book club called Book Club”… pursuits I imagine many of us might be able to relate to! Connect with Nicolle @nikhodges or at nicollehodges.com.
Tell us who you are in five words or less.
I’m Nicolle “Double L” Hodges
Where did you grow up, where do you live now, and if you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Abbotsford. Vancouver. Vancouver (but in a better apartment)
What is one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
It is my ultimate goal to own a hairless cat named Brain. We will be the best of friends. Never give up on your goals.
What does a balanced life look like to you? How do you achieve it?
I don’t believe in balance. I believe in throwing yourself wholeheartedly at whatever sets your soul on fire and not paying any attention to the amount of time you spend on it, so long as it makes you happy and doesn’t hurt the ones you love. I believe life has four burners: family/relationship, friends, career, and health. You can only tend to three burners at once, so one will always be on “the back burner.” That’s life. We can’t tend to everything at once. There is no balance. There are only choices.
How do you define happiness?
Happiness is the pursuit of my goals without fear. Accepting failure as an option and growing from the experiences that let me down. Embracing uncertainty. Following my instincts. A glass of wine. A nap. A day to read. Spending time with my boyfriend, eating popcorn in the front row of the movie theater, laughing endlessly. Walking in the rain.
How did you choose the path you are currently walking? (Running? Sprinting?)
I knew I wanted to be a journalist/work in media since I was very young and I never stopped pursuing it. At some points I walk, at other times I run, sometimes I trip, and some days it’s a sprint. But I never stop moving towards that goal. Someone asked me the other day what my “spirit animal” would be. It’s a rhino. The reason being that when a rhino charges it can only see a few feet ahead, yet it still goes full speed because it trusts in the direction it’s headed. I don’t need to know what comes next to believe I’ll get there.
What are you most grateful for, why?
I am most grateful for the people I have in my life. They are my home. They are the ones who support my crazy ideas and hold me accountable to my goals. They are the ones who bring me back to earth if I’m getting too caught up in the world of media. They are the village I run back to if I feel chased by lions. They fill me up when I’m feeling down. It’s so important to surround yourself with people who inspire you; who believe in their own goals as much as you believe in yours. I’m grateful that life has brought me such a wonderful cast of characters.
